A possibility of reliable and time saving evaluation of the frost resistivity of building ceramic bricks was investigated using the indirect method for evaluating the frost resistivity of natural concrete aggregates. The method was established by one of the present authors, Hudec, by analysing statistically the correlation coefficients between some characteristic factors of the materials and the frost resistivity determined by a direct freeze-thaw method. Water absorption, apparent porosity, degree of saturation, water adsorption under the relative humidity of 98%, linear expansion on water adsorption, as well as on water absorption, and pore size distribution were chosen as characteristic factors of the materials that may be correlated to the frost resistivity. Among seven characteristic factors, the water adsorption data under the relative humidity of 98% was best correlated to the resistivity and was found to be the most appropriate for indirect evaluation. The close correlations between pore size distribution and freeze-thaw loss supported the concept on the mechanism of frost damages in the materials fully saturated with water under one dimensional cooling conditions that have been introduced by the present authors, Nakamura and Okuda.
