When refractories used in metal refining processes are subjected to temperature cycling, thermal spalling is often observed.
The present study was performed in order to clarify the thermal stress fracture behavior of magnesia, magnesia-dolomite and high-alumina refractories when heated from one end by using an acoustic emission technique and a panel spalling method.
Extraneous noise caused by heating apparatus or by cracking of the surrounding refractories of a specimen was low level as compared to burst signals from micro and macro cracking of the specimen.
It has been shown that acoustic emission data are highly sensitive to both specimen material and cracking activity. Quite different acoustic emission characteristics were obtained for three kinds of refractories, reflecting the difference of their crack propagation processes. This difference can be accounted for to some extent by considering bonding characteristics of them.
It is concluded that the acoustic emission technique offers a unique method to evaluate the crack initiation-propagation mechanism in various refractories under thermal shock conditions.
