Abstract

A new method of producting a heater made of MoSi2 as heating element was proposed. Granular Al2O3 made of conglomerated powders was mixed with MoSi2 and sintered. Using this technique, high electric conductivity was obtained with low MoSi2 content. While, commercially available MoSi2 heating elements usually contain much Al2O3 and/or SiO2 to improve mechanical strength, which gives rise to low electric conductivity as Schrewelius' patent described that electric conductivity would be lost with nonconducting phase more than 80wt%.
Using the present method,
(1) The authors obtained a heating element with MoSi2 less than 20wt%.
(2) Increase in Al2O3 content improved not only mechanical strength but also resistivity to oxidation and erosion under various atmospheres at high temperature.
(3) Through this present investigation, new concepts of making new type of composite structure were introduced.
