The effects of steatite contamination from ball milling media on hot-pressing of nitride prepared from siliceous sand and Al powder were studied by means of shrinkage measurement during hot-pressing, X-ray diffraction method and scanning electron microscopic observation.<br>The hot-pressing experiments were carried out at the temperature range of 1600° to 1880°C under pressures of 100 to 400kg/cm2 for 1h. The microstructure of the hot-pressed specimen obviously showed that the liquid phase sintering occurred in the specimen contaminated with steatite. The steatite in the specimen gave cordierite which formed reactive liquid in hot-pressing through reaction with α-Al2O3. The as-nitrided solid prepared from siliceous sand and Al powder needed higher temperature and higher pressure for densifica tion compared with the specimens contaminated with steatite.<br>It was considered to be due to the absence of liquid phase in hot-pressing of the asnitrided solid.<br>From microscopic observation and densification curves, the densification of the as-nitrided solid seemed to proceed through the following mechanisms; grain boundary sliding in the initial stage of densification, diffusion process in solid state in the intermediate stage.
