The Formation of β-Sialon in the System Si<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub>-SiO<sub>2</sub>-AlN

Abstract

β-sialon was formed in the system Si3N4-SiO2-AlN by the reaction, (4-z)Si3N4+zSiO2+2zAlN=2Si6-zAlzOzN8-z where z=1, 2, 3 or 4. The powder mixture was hot pressed at 1750°C for 1h under 200kg/cm2. The shrinkage occurred at lower temperature in the order of z value, 4>3>2>1, i.e., a sialon with larger amount of solid solubility was more easily sintered.<br>The reactions included in present system was inferred to be, Si3N4+SiO2+AlN→X-phase at about 1550°C, Si3N4+X-phase+AlN→β-sialon at 1600°-1700°C.<br>The formation of β-sialon and the densification of the compact was accelerated at about 1600°C by melting of X-phase. The densification was incomplete to obtain fully dense material in the composition z=1. Sialon with other composition showed complete densification.<br>Microstructural studies revealed that sialon with z=4 was the most homogeneous.<br>The reactions are discussed with relation to those in the system Si3N4-Al2O3-AlN.
