Abstract

A hydrate was prepared by applying spark discharge to Mg-Al alloy pellets. The reaction product consisted mainly of polygonal-plate-shaped particles ranging from 1 to 2μm. These particles gradually disintegrated with increasing temperature, and at about 1100°C became homogeneous, spinel-phase fine powder having the particle size of 0.1 to 0.2μm. The purity and composition of the product obtained by chemical analysis well agreed with those calculated from the compositions of starting alloying elements. Total impurities were less than 0.1wt%. The green compacts of 1000°C- and 1100°C-heat treated powders, which were pressed under a pressure of 1000kg/cm2 without additives, had low densities ranging from 1.5 to 1.6g/cm3. Nevertheless, the green compacts, which were sintered at 1500°C for 3h under ambient atmospher, gave relatively high density of 3.5g/cm3.
