Description
Chemoradiation therapy is widely employed as a radical modality for head and neck cancers, although neck dissection still plays an important role in the treatments. The head and neck anatomy should be thoroughly learned in order to perform neck dissection safely.
The lymph nodes of the neck are in spaces surrounded by fasciae. Neck dissection requires removal of those lymph nodes with fat tissue, some muscles, vessels, and nerves of the neck. The fasciae are sometimes not clearly identified, so a good knowledge of the skeletal structures and muscles of the head and neck is necessary for precise surgery.
With adequate knowledge not only of the surgical anatomy but also surgical instruments, stable operations can be offered that can overcome difficult surgical situations. From this point of view, it would be useful for head and neck surgeons undergoing training to keep practicing appropriate, accurate dissections in accordance with the anatomical structures.
