Description

Seventy patients with oral, oropharyngeal, and hypopharyngeal carcinomas were treated at our institution during the period from January 2000 to December 2009. They were classified into two groups: A group (35 cases, from 75 to 79 years old) and B group (35 cases, from 80 to 93 years old).
A significant difference was not evident between the A and B groups in relation to factors such as the clinical staging, systemic complications, multiple primary cancers, and performance status.
In B group, radical cure treatment was difficult compared with A group, and half of the cases refused such treatment. However, the 5-year diseases-specific survival rates were 62.7% in A group and 63.2% in B group, and there was no significant difference between the groups when treatments followed the policy of our institution.
The rate of complications after the treatment was 21.2% in A group and 45.2% in B group, and there were 2 death cases due to serious complications after treatment. We note the high incidence of complications and severity of the diseases associated with treatment of 80-year-old or older patients.
