Abstract

[Purpose] To study the actual situation of four-year practical training in community health nursing at health care centers that the third-year students of our school underwent after finishing the integrated curriculum and to effectively apply the study findings for future educational activities. [Methods] We analyzed the past records of the practical training done by 314 third-year students during the period from 2000 through 2003 and the reports written by 75 third-year students after completion of the training in 2002. The items analyzed in the study were as follows : 1) Whether or not they have had experiences of practical training and what were the contents of the practical training. 2) Advance in students' knowledge based on the qualitative analysis of the contents of the practical training, which were chosen from the viewpoint of training purposes. [Results] 1) The actual situation of the four-year practical training was as follows : 1 An increase in the "practical" experiences with educational approaches. 2 Changes in the contents of "practical" training. 3 A decreased in the experiences of continued home visits. 2) Regarding the contents of the practical training, students learned the following : 1 The relationship between health issues and community activities. 2 Cooperation among continued nursing institutions, staffs and related specialists in mental health projects. In the future, it is important to improve the in-school practices for practical training prior to the actual on-site practical training and to obtain closer cooperation with the facilities for training.
