Description

In this symposium, we discussed the changes in Japanese forensic psychological research with the introduction of video recordings of interrogations. Three forensic psychologists reported their experiences on providing advice to police officers and prosecutors with regard to forensic interviews and/or evaluating video-recorded interrogations. First, Kotaro Takagi overviewed the relation between credibility assessment of testimony and interrogation records and emphasized the need for developing analytic technology for video-recorded interrogation and supporting the improvement of interrogation techniques. Second, Naohisa Mori introduced an analysis of audio-recorded interrogation in the Ashikaga Case as an example of a follow-up review using audio or video records; the possibility for improving interrogation techniques using "Conversational Management" was indicated. Third, Makiko Naka outlined four methods to support interrogation through forensic interviews, which were 1) providing training programs, 2) preparing adequately for individual interviews, 3) supporting interview implementation, and 4) analyzing and evaluating video-records. Finally, the three discussants commented on those presentations: Sumio Hamada as a forensic psychologist, Makoto Ibusuki as a jurist, and Yoji Ochiai as a former prosecutor.
