The purpose of this research is to investigate the optimum farming conditions for mushrooms from an engineering viewpoint. In this study, the effects of wavelength of light stimuli on the bio-electric potential and the morphogenetic properties of Pleurotus eryngii have been examined. Initially, the response characteristics of the bio-electric potential against wavelength (from 420 nm to 680 nm)were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the response has tended to a maximum at a wavelength in the blue region (from 420 nm to 480 nm). In comparison with the experimental results previously obtained, the response characteristics for Pleurotus eryngii are similar to those of Pholiota nameko which belong to the same classification as Pleurotus eryngii, rather than those of Grifola frondosa. Morphogenesis in varied illumination (fluorescent light, blue-LED, red-LED, dark condition) was then compared using the bio-electric potential as an index. It was noted that morphogenesis under blue-LED, consisting of wide pileus and short stem similar to that which grew in the wild, was associated with an increased bio-electric potential. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the magnitude of the bio-electric potential is an effective index for the clarification of environmental conditions suitable for mushroom cultivation.
