The effects of additions of various oxides on the transverse strength of sintered alumina bodies were investigated with 2, 5 and 10% additions of NiO, CoO, Fe2O3, MnO, Cr2O3, TiO2, CaO, SiO2, MgO and ZrO2. The 1000°C strength of alumina bodies added with 2-10% of oxides are greater with their higher softening temperatures (the temperature at which liquefaction begins in the equilibrium of the system composed of alumina and the added oxides) as shown in Fig. 3. The additions of NiO, CoO and MgO are effective in firing at 1600°C and Cr2O3 at 1750°C. The 1000° strength has a slight correlation with the crystal grain sizes of sintered bodies.
