Description

The tribological properties of Si3N4 ceramics may be improved by incorporating solid lubricant, BN into Si3N4 ceramics. Si3N4-BN composite ceramics were fabricated by hot-pressing with 2-30wt% BN content. The Vickers hardness of the composites decreased rapidly with increasing BN content, and the fracture toughness showed a maximum at 5wt% BN. The friction and wear of the composites were measured by a pin-on-disk tester at a load 1kg and a sliding velocity of 1-8cm/s. The coefficient of friction did not change by addition of BN, but the specific wear rate was decreased from 10-7 to 10-8mm2/kg by the addition of more than 20wt% BN. The solid lubrication of BN is effective, if BN content is adequate to be distributed continuously in the Si3N4-BN composite ceramics.
