Abstract

Thermal fatigue life of sintered mullite rods quenched in water under mechanical load and flexural strength were measured. On the basis of the data, validity of formulae for predicting thermal fatigue life under mechanical load, which were previously applied to glass rods, was discussed. The data of thermal fatigue life agreed well with the formulae for predicting thermal fatigue life. Moreover, the value of n (V=AKIn, V: velocity of slow crack growth, KI: stress intensity factor) determined from the data of thermal fatigue life agreed with that determined from dependence of flexural strength on stressing rate. These results proved the validity of the formulae for predicting thermal fatigue life under mechanical load. Fractured surface made in water quenching was different from that made by bending stress alone and was smooth. This difference was considered to have resulted from difference of velocity of crack growth.
