Six letters sent from M. A. Fenton to C. Ishikawa in the 1880s are preserved in the University Museum of Tokyo, and now shown for the first time. As Ishikawa later became a Professor of Zoology in the University of Tokyo, the letters contain many biological and entomological topics of historical interest. These letters reveal new facts about the early period of modern Japanese lepidopterology. A letter written in the summer of 1884 demonstrates a hitherto unknown contribution of Fenton to the identification of a Luehdorfia butterfly, which was newly discovered in the mainland of Japan by Y. Nawa in April, 1883. A tentative 127 species catalogue of Japanese butterflies compiled at that time is restored from the letter and related references. Serial numbers from the list were used in the letter to designate the butterfly species, for the convenience of mutual communication.
