Abstract

We investigated the changes of gastric mucosal atrophy (GMA) in subjects with long-term follow-up by annual upper gastrointestinal barium X-ray screening. Of 1457 subjects observed over 12 years, 550 (37.7%) had GMA in the initial examination, and of these 81 subjects (14.7%) revealed changes of GMA during the follow-up period. Of 81 subjects, 21 subjects (3.8%) had regression of GMA and 60 subjects (10.9%) revealed progression of GMA. Changes of GMA were statistically higher in subjects over 50 years old than in those under 50 years old (P≤0.01). The incidence of regression of GMA was highly observed in subjects under 39 years old, and the incidence of progression of GMA was highly found in subjects over 40 years old (P≤0.01). In the GMA regression group, all subjects revealed an improvement of mucosal surface pattern and morphological changes of folds. Moreover, regression of the area of gastric folds was not found in 5 (23.8%) out of 21 subjects. On the other hand, of 60 subjects with progression of GMA, 21 subjects (35.0%) had changes of mucosal surface pattern, 51 subjects (85.0%) revealed morphological changes of folds, and 49 subjects (81.7%) showed changes of the area of gastric folds.
