Abstract

The ultrasonic findings from 155 cases of breast cancer and 47 cases of benign lesions out of a total of 202 cases of breast lesions, regarding the mass image-forming types from November 2005 to December 2006 at the Kotoni Clinic, were investigated using the Guidelines.
Ultrasonic findings determined the following.
1. As to shapes breast cancers had polygonal/irregular shapes more than benign lesions (p,0.0001).
2. As to boundary zone breast cancers were more irregular than benign lesions (p,0.0001).
3. Halo of boundary zone of breast cancers was present in the fatty tissue, but it was absent in the mammary tissue (p,0.0001).
4. As to interruption of the gland surface breast cancers had more interruption than benign lesions (p,0.0001).
5. As to internal echo breast cancers were more heterogeneous than benign lesions (p,0.0001).
In conclusion it was suggested that shape, border, internal echo, and interruption of the gland surface were useful for distinction between benign and malignant lesions. The tissue structure around breast cancers may influence ultrasonic findings of the boundary zone.
