It is important to consider prognostic factors when determining the most appropriate treatment for breast cancer. Although the prognosis for (n0) breast cancer is generally good, there is evidence of the recurrence of breast cancer. One of prognostic factors is determined by using the grading system. A prognostic factor of breast cancer can be determined by comparing the ultrasonic findings with the grading system. The ultrasonic findings from 67 cases of (n0) invasive ductal carcinoma out of a total of i145 cases of primary breast cancer (June, 2004 to December, 2004 Kotoni Clinic) were investigated using the “General Rules for Clinical and Pathological Recording of Breast Cancer (June 2004).”
1. Ultrasonic findings classified in Grade 1 tended to be irregular shaped. In contrast, ultrasonic findings classified in Grade 3 tended to be polygonal shaped. (p=0.0010)
2. Irregular internal echo increased in relation to increase in nuclear grade. (p=0.0492)
3. Accentuating posterior echo increased in relation to increase in nuclear grade. (p=0.0121)
4. Cooper ligament retraction decreased in relation to increase in nuclear grade. (p=0.0146)
5. Doppler method increased significantly in relation to increase in nuclear grade. (p=0.0118)
In conclusion, shape, internal echoes, posterior echoes, Cooper's ligament retraction, and Doppler method correlate well with levels in the grading system used for analyzing (n0) breast cancer. It may be possible to determine a new prognostic factor using this classification.
