Abstract

We studied ultrasonographic(US) findings of prostate carcinoma, and evaluated the diagnostic usefulness in the differentiation between prostatic carcinoma(PC) (39cases) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) (50cases).US findings characterize to the PC group were deformity, irregular out line, and changes of internal echo of the prostate.<br> There was no difference in the depth/width ratio between the PC and BPH groups.<br> The detection sensitivity of US examination in the diagnosis of PC was lower than tumor makers including PSA, PSAD, γ -sm, and γ -smD. The detection specificity of US examination was higher than of these tumor makers (the specificity of PSAD was 20% higher than PSA). In conclusion clinical usefulness of US examination in the diagnosis of PC as screening tests is limited because of its lower sensitivity(53.8%). However, its higher specificity and characteristic findings for the presence and the stage of diseases warranty its usage as a further evaluation of suspected patients after performing screening tests with tumor makers.
