Abstract

Pleomorphic liposarcoma (PL) is a rare subtype of liposarcoma that carries a poor prognosis because of the high incidence of local recurrence and metastasis. Here we report the case of a 69-year-old man with bulky re-recurrent PL that showed a remarkable response to hyperthermoradiotherapy.<br> The patient was diagnosed with PL in his right thigh and was treated with total tumorectomy and radiotherapy (50 Gy in 2-Gy fractions in 5 weeks). However, the tumor recurred 9 months after treatment, necessitating a second surgery. A year after the second resection, the tumor recurred again and the patient received hyperthermia (5 sessions in 5 weeks). However, the tumor continued to grow. Subsequently, we decided to administer hyperthermoradiotherapy (a total radiotherapy dose of 40 Gy in 2-Gy fractions and 4 hyperthermia sessions in 4 weeks). After hyperthermoradiotherapy, the tumor shrunk remarkably and did not regrow for 2 years until death. This case report indicates that hyperthermoradiotherapy may be a useful treatment option for patients with recurrent PL.
