The operational features of a carbonization plant operated at low temperature, and characteristics of the generation and quality of carbonized sludge were investigated using dried sludge generated in a domestic wastewater treatment system. The heavy oil consumption rate was at its maximum, and nearly constant at the carbonized sludge generation rate of about 30-40 kg/h. However, it showed a tendency to decrease according to an increased carbonized sludge generation rate of over about 40 kg/h, through the effective action of pyrolysis gas. The degree of reduction in the sludge weight and the degradation degree of the solid matter were at 66.2-85.4 (average : 79.1) % and 46.9-76.1 (65.3) % respectively. The eluted TOC concentration, adopted as an index to evaluate the progress of carbonization, was at about 10 mg/L or less at the carbonized sludge generation rate of about 30 kg/h or less and at approximately 40 kg/h or more. On the other hand, it exceeded 10 mg/L in many cases when the generation rate was between about 30 kg/h and about 40 kg/h. Taking into consideration the results for heavy oil consumption, the higher eluted TOC concentration might be attributed to a shortage of heat being generated by the burning of sludge and pyrolysis gas. The concentrations for heavy metals eluted from the carbonized sludge were out of the problem, however, in some cases, their contents in the sludge samples exceeded the allowable values for fertilizer. Phosphorous, kalium, and most kinds of metals in sludge were concentrated corresponding to the ratio of (TS of raw sludge) / (TS of carbonized sludge) by carbonization.
