Treatment of excess sludge is an important problem to be solved even for small and middle-scale domestic wastewater treatment facilities. Therefore, effective sludge reduction technologies have been needed. In this work, we focused on the development of an effective aerobic digestion process for the reduction of sludge and employed a pilot-scale mesh-filtration bioreactor (MFBR), in which mesh-filtration units were submerged in the aeration tank. Reactor-A (working volume: 0.1m3) was used to examine the filtration performance considering the following points: the structure of the mesh-module and the filtration protocol. Reactor-B (working volume: 1m3) received the return sludge in a domestic wastewater treatment facility (Johkasou) in our institutionThe SS removal performance was examined, with the sludge fed once each day and filtration conducted every hour. In the latter half of the experimental period (Phase-3), a very high MLSS concentration (~30g/L) was maintained, and 91.2% of the fed SS was reduced under the following conditions: HRT=14.2 days, 0.0237kg−SS/kg−MLSS/d loading rate, 8.7-23°C. The percent of the CODCr (particulate and dissolved) removed from the fed sludge was 88.8%, and the level of dissolved CODCr of the effluent was about 50mg/L. In addition, 85% of the T-N was also removed from the fed sludge.
