Effects of the Pointing and Verbal Confirmation Actions in the Process of Intravenous Injection (full text in Japanese)

Description

The purposes of this study were to clarify the effects of "pointing and verbal confirmation actions" in reducing errors in the process of intravenous injection by nurses, and to identify related factors which influenced in the process.<br>A questionnaire consisting of two scales was used to conduct this survey, measuring both level of behavioral awareness and unsafe actions in the process of intravenous injection. Five hundred and twenty nurses grouped into three were given this questionnaire, three groups were the introductory group, the pointing and mastered group, and the double-check group.<br>In the comparison before and after their introduction to the introductory group, it was observed that the pointing and verbal confirmation actions were effective in avoiding errors in terms of risky actions. Upon classifying the subjects in the introductory group by years of nursing experience, the most significant effect was observed among the non-experienced subjects. In the comparison among three groups, the pointing and mastered group had the highest effects in avoiding errors.<br>The results of the study indicated that pointing and verbal confirmation actions had certain effects with related factors including the length of the period which the confirmation actions were used, and nursing experience.
