Description
It has been recognized that DEM is a successful tool in analyzing geomechanical problems. However, the mechanical behaviors of ground may be much influenced by pore water, whose effects have not been considered by the conventional DEM.<br>This paper presents a modified DEM which can simulate interaction between solid skeleton and pore water. This method was advanced to explain the irrevesible deformation of solid skeleton, by developing a procedure of decrease of element contact stiffness due to increase of contact force. The advanced DEM was applied to soil and water problems, such as consolidation and liquefaction. Some numerical results have proved that this method has a high potential in analyzing the pore water in the soil.
