Description
Many experimental studies on the soil behaviours under plane strain condition have been done. However, it is thought that there are very few actual cases placed in the perfect plane strain state that one lateral strain is zero. This paper investigates the influences of various magnitudes of lateral strains on shear behaviour of Toyoura sand specimens. It shows that stress path is influenced sensitively by lateral strain smaller than 0.1%, but that shear strength is insensitive and expected to be almost equal to the perfect plane strain strength even if the lateral strain is allowed largely by the value just before failure in triaxial test.
