Abstract

Polymers possessing reactive organometallic repeating units in the main chain are potentially applicable to novel reactive polymers which serve as powerful synthetic precursors for various main chain-functionalized materials. Accordingly, organometallic polymers containing metallacycles such as cobaltacyclopentadiene and titanacyclopentadiene were prepared and their reactions were studied. The metallacyclopentadiene-containing polymers were prepared by the reactions of diynes with low-valent organometallic complexes. Cobaltacyclopentadiene-containing polymers are air-stable materials that can be converted into other organocobalt polymers possessing cyclobutadinecobalt and cobalticinium units and into organic polymers with diverse main chain functionality. Likewise, regioregular organotitanium polymers produced from aromatic terminal diynes and low-valent titanium complexes provide ic-conjugated organic polymers possessing unsaturated backbones in the main chain by their polymer reactions. Properties of the organometallic polymers will also be described.
