In order to convert cyclopentanol (1) to glutaric acid (2), the oxidation by means of nitric acid was studied. The influences of the concentration and the amount of nitric acid, the reaction temperature, and the catalysts (ammonium meta-vanadate, vanadium (V) oxide, and copper carbonate) on the selective conversion to (2) were investigated.
(1) was oxidized with 2070% nitric acid (5 : 1 molar ratio of nitric acid/ (1)) at 40°C. The yield of the total dibasic acid ((2), succinic acid, and oxalic acid) increased steeply to 91.3% with 30% nitric acid, and increased little by little as the concentration of nitric acid became higher. The selectivity of (2), however, was maximum with 40 and 50% nitric acid. The yield of the total dibasic acid decreased with an increase in the reaction temperature.
By the addition of the catalyst, the induction period and the time to complete the foaming were shortened, and the sudden exothermic reaction could be controlled. The yield of the total dibasic acid was increased to 95.2% and that of (2) was increased to 89.2% under the following conditions : ammonium meta-vanadate 0.3%, nitric acid concentration 40%, molar ratio of nitric acid to (1) 5, and reaction temperature 30°C.
