In my paper entitled “Considering the Meaning of Marriage as Observed in Women”, I would first like to outline the issues to be considered, which include among others : exactly who are the women who question the meaning of marriage; how can their various concepts concerning marriage be categorized; and whether present-day Japan can be said to be following a latemarriage or single-life trend. Based on answers to these questions and also taking into consideration official statistics, information culled from the Internet, surveys of students and interviews with single parent female friends, I considered the meaning marriage has for single women. Some findings of interest are as follows : 1) There is a marked difference in gender regarding information on marriage; 2) Advantages of being single are higher in women than in men, with women having a higher standard as regards their marriage partner thus making it more difficult for them to make the transition from single to married life as compared with men; and 3) The concept of marriage among contemporary women is a mixture of pre-modern, modern, and post-modern concepts.
