Studies on “international marriage” tend to speak from the immigrant receiving side and to treat all foreign brides homogeneously as “Asian-brides.” This study's target is Chinese brides who have emigrated to marry Japanese men in rural towns. Case studies were used to analyze the recruitment process in China and push factors involved in such “international marriages.” Findings reveal the following factors lead to emigration; economic, gender, cultural, and multiple factors existing in Chinese society forcing these women to the periphery. An important component of the economic factor is the income level difference between the particular areas in China where the women were raised, and that of Japan. Two gender related factors revealed in this study are, traditional Chinese patriarchy, and a newer neo-patriarchy tendency born by the influx of multinational corporations' hiring of young women. This study reveals the tendency for abstraction of “rural brides, ” and the dynamics of the family formation process in rural areas experienced by foreign brides.
