Abstract

Meteorological observation was conducted in the early December 2014 in the East China Sea to investigate the atmospheric structure in generating the meteotsunami, which recorded as large amplified secondary oscillation in the coastal area of (south-)west Kyushu. We measured the vertical profile of wind, temperature, humidity, and pressure level using GPS-sonde released from the shipboard.<br> During the operation, high pressure system of the Eurasian continant was expanded to southeast along with the circulation around cold vortex of northeast China. The high pressure sytem was generated to the south Japan of the Pacific ocean cut from the continental high. After that, the cold front was generated between a couple of the high pressure systems. In the night of 3 December 2014, observation spot around Mejima was located nearby the front, and the unstable layer was measured around 5 km above sea level in such condition. The pressure fluctuation on the shipboard was amplified as large as 1.0 hPa after the front genesis. The tide gauge observation at Makurazaki of south Kyushu indicated the tide level began oscillated in the late night of the 3 December, amplifying gradually. And the maximum amplitude was recorded by 80 cm as the secondary oscillation around the noon. Hence, we obtained very precious dataset related to the meteotsunami generation in the East China Sea.
