Abstract
Coastal structures that work persistently against tsunami attacks are important to reduce tsunami damages on coastal area. In order to realize the persistence of coastal structures, it is important to understand the mechanism of structural damages under tsunami action. Some hydraulic laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the characteristics of local scouring on gravel mound under tsunami overflow conditions. This study proposed some equations to estimate maximum scoured depth, scoured width and scoured location, and good agreements of those equations were confirmed. This study also proposed a horizontal plate as a countermeasure to reduce the local scouring of gravel mound. The plate reduced the local scouring effectively when its length was longer than 1.5 times of plunging point where the overflowed tsunami hits the water surface.
