Description
Belarus is regarded as a "repressive dictatorship" by the international community. In reality, however, the living standard is constantly increasing and its unemployment ratio is quite low compared to the other CIS countries. One third of the former-state enterprises has been privatized, but the government's influence is maintained inside the privatized companies. In 2003 Belarus' imports from Russia amounted to 76 billion dollars, but there were at least 23 billion dollars worth of grants from Russia. Without these financial supports by Russia the high economic growth of Belarus was impossible. On the other hand foreign direct investments from EU and US are indispensable for the future of this country.
