The locus classicus of the linguistic turn is Frege's Context Principle in Grundlagen, which transforms the ontological question into the linguistic one. Frege's explanation concerning the difference in cognitive values of judgements in terms of the distinction of sense and denotation is another aspect of the linguistic turn. Nevertheless the most prominent one is the claim that the theory of meaning is to occupy the central position in philosophy. Some characteristics of Frege's and Davidson's truth-conditional theories of meaning are argued and it is critically considered whether Davidson's holistic approach is consistent with the notion of reference. Finally some proposals concerning the semantics of belief-ascription are scrutinized.
