Abstract
The purpose of this research is to make clear the role of caregivers who help young children make their picture books. Although young children are attracted by making picture books, it involves the difficulty of integrating the contents on several pages. The process needs efforts and deep self-involvement of young children. They may choose their most favorite themes and work hard for making picture books in which their human natures become apparent. In this research, children of around 5 years old made picture books at home during the summer holidays. After the completion, their mothers responded to our questions about the activity and feeling of the children. The picture books are classified into three groups based on the contents. The first group is categorized as ‘illustrated book’. The children who made this kind of picture books seeked information about their favorite things. The second group is categorized as ‘story book’. The children who made this kind of picture books imagined their favorite stories. The third group is categorized as ‘album’. The children who made this kind of picture books enjoyed the past events. Although these groups are different in contents, every group shows some kind of self-involvement. We consider the support methods for the children which are suitable to each individual activity style.
