In this paper, I consider the relationship between harassment cases in universities and characteristics of university laboratories in Japan by interview to sixteen graduate school students and one faculty of Hokkaido University. Harassment cases in universities are divided into two types in Japan: "Sexual harassment" and "Academic harassment". Academic harassment is the word that has been used only in Japan. Academic harassment means harassment except for sexual harassment in universities, other words, bullying or abuse.
From interview data, I found three characteristics of university laboratories. First one is exclusiveness. Members of laboratories stay together for long hours with limited members. Second one is teachers' power. Teachers are on the top of laboratories and have many rights. Third one is homosociality. Homosociality is characterized by misogyny and homophobia. Female students are disadvantaged in laboratories in several ways. In addition there are gay jokes in laboratories. On the other hand, female students try to adjust themselves and make resistances in laboratories.
In many laboratories, most of teachers and graduate students are male in Japan. In the laboratories, teachers and male students tend to make rules at the convenience of themselves. Female students are often disadvantaged. Interview data suggest that there should be many latent harassment cases in even "ordinal" university laboratories. Even when harassment cases take place, it can be hidden in the exclusive and hornosocial laboratories.
