Abstract
The objective of this paper is to consider the present situation, issues and future outlook of less favored areas in Romania. Romania is working towards accession to the EU in 2007, and is promoting an adjustment policy of domestic agriculture with support from the EU. We twice conducted investigations in Iacobeni village, in the mountainous northern county of Suceava.
Agriculture in Iacobeni village is generally family-operated and centers mainly on animal husbandry (dairy cows and sheep). Traditional agriculture prevails and work is predominantly carried out using "livestock-driven equipment and manual labor". The tiny management scale and 'post-Revolution' decline in agricultural productivity has made it difficult for most farmers to sustain their livelihoods through agriculture alone. Currently, rural tourism is experiencing a boom and the pastoral scenery of rural areas has been highlighted by this. Self-managed side-businesses such as guesthouses and shops have increased. On the other hand, concern about the destruction of the environ-ment has escalated.
It is important to find ways in which rural communities can be revitalized whilst maintaining the natural environment and preserving the beautiful landscape. Our investigations indicated that the mayor and residents of Iacobeni village have a great deal of interest in agricultural cooperatives and it became clear that they have some intention of heading in that direction. We therefore believe that presently, the most vital course of action is to continue focusing on this kind of move by regional agriculture towards becoming more independent, and on public aid from the EU in order to support such moves.
