Description
Although the differentiation of the rural community and the labor market of the city have been an object of area studies in Thailand, there has been little research on the educational system and institutions in order to investigate phases of social change. However, in recent Thai industry, the businesses of information and communication, service, and finance and investment have surpassed those of manufacturing in terms volume of business. It may be said that Thai society has reached the late capitalist and/or consumer society stage. Nowadays commercial educational services play a supplementary role in providing knowledge and information for those building academic careers as well as furnishing symbolic rewards. Parents in the city often force their children to attend cram schools to study English, computer, and subjects for entrance exams to prestigious high schools and universities. Conversely, even village children usually enter high school and, if possible, vocational college, with a view to becoming white-collar workers. Therefore, family budgets bear considerable educational expenses, thus generating related business in undeveloped areas.
I stayed to carry out research at the Research Institute of Northeastern Art and Culture of Mahasarakham University from March till December 1997. This brief report introduces the educational condition of Mahasarakham city, which has aimed at provincially based education related industries and then focuses on how the university institutionalizes area studies of northeastern Thailand and researches development activities there.
The point of the second topic is that the thought of community culture has been built into the curriculums of the community development BA and Thai studies MA of Mahasarakham University. This problematic discourse, provoked by Dr. Chattip Nartsupha and et.al., and NGO advocates, has become the official theory used to interprets social reality there. According to this method, those who have majored in this course of study execute development programs. Therefore, the fact that social discourse produces development activities should be the first concern of researchers of area studies of northeastern Thailand.
