抄録

    This paper aims to explain the indigenization of foreign religions through a case study of Okinawa's urban regions in modern times.  Religions have been privatized as a result of modernization.  However, they are still recognized as one kind of social norms in the present day.  Explaining how foreign religions have been accepted in Okinawan culture is the focus of this paper. <br>    In Okinawa, with the post-war urbanization, folk religions originated in Okinawa have not been able to exhibit strong salvation.  For this reason, foreign religions have been accepted because they are more organized and systemized in promoting a universal divinity as well as communications and religious activities among believers. <br>    Based on those imported religions, Okinawan believers go on to add their own imaginations to form new religious practices that are more suitable for their custom and lifestyle.  In addition, believers reconstruct the relationship between their religions and local culture by using the following strategies: (1)“diversion / reuse of religious customs”, (2)“avoidance of religiosity that is particular to local folk religions”, (3)“religious continuity / connection between foreign religions and folk religions”.  In that way, believers can avoid criticisms from their families, and enable foreign religions and folk religions to coexist. <br>    The faiths of such believers are examples of creative religious practices which do not conform themselves to the doctrine and/or compromise to the local culture in the indigenization process.
