Abstract

Anthropometric measurement were obtained on 119 male Japanese university students (mean age 22.7 years, C group) and 28 male Japanese athletic students (mean age 21.0 years, A group). The mean value of height for A group (172.7cm) was considerably larger than that for C group (171.0cm) and the mean value of body weight for A group (66.8kg) was significantly larger than that for C group (64.4kg). The mean values of girth of chest and upper arm were 93.0cm and 28.4cm for A group, these values were significantly larger than corresponding values for C group (89.5cm and 27.3cm respectively). Group A showed larger mean value of girth of thigh (52.5cm) than group C (50.9cm). Group A showed higher mean values of Rohrer's index and Brugsch's index (131.5 and 53.9 respectively) than C group (128.5 and 52.7 respectively).
The following prediction equation for normal body weight (kg) from height (cm) was obtained:
Body weight=1.072 height-119.1
The mean value of skinfold thickness for A group (7.3mm) was significantly thinner than that for C group (13.2mm) and relative smaller distribution of subcutaneous fat in the trunk was observed in A group than in C group.
Body fat contents calculated by using the prediction formula from mean skinfold thickness for A group (9.3%) was significantly smaller than that for C group (14.0%).
Plotting of body weight (or Rohrer's index) and body fat contents in standard measure against height in standard measure was used to differentiate the effect of physical training on physical characteristics from those of excessive nutrition and heat acclimatization.
