Effect of basidiomycetes on plasma cholesterol in rats was tested by adding dried basidiomycetes at 5% level to hypercholesterolemic diet containing 1% cholesterol and 0.3% sodium cholate. Among 24 species of basidiomycetes tested, we found some hypocholesterolemic effects in fruit bodies of 9 species of basidiomycetes, Enokitake (Flammulina velutipes), Shiitake (Lentinus edodes), Nameko (Pholiota nameko), Tsukuritake (Agaricus bisporus), Kohtake (Sarcodon aspratus), Kikurage (Auricularia auricula-judae), Shirokikurage (Tremella fuciformis), Aragekikurage (Auricularia polytricha) and Chanametsumutake (Pholista lubrica). Hypocholesterolemic effect of Enokitake, Tsukuritake and Kikurage showed almost the same level as that of Shiitake, and especially that of Enokitake was the most effective in these basidiomycetes. There could not be found any hypocholesterolemic effect in vegetative hyphae of the tested basidiomycetes except Shirokikurage, and on the contrary there was found a higher hypercholesterolemic effect in vegetative hyphae of Hohkitake.
