Description
“Foot care” refers to special care for foot-related problems. More specifically, in clinical settings, foot care is defined as “clinical treatment for foot problems.” Since the days of Florence Nightingale, nurses have assumed the responsibility of providing foot care to patients who are unable to adequately take care of themselves. At present, the care provided by hospitals and care facilities is similar; however, it is important to make a further distinction between foot care provided by nursing practitioners and clinical treatment for foot problems. It is important for nurses to understand that their provision of foot care does not involve clipping excessively long nails or cuticle care for calluses and corns. Furthermore, due to Japan’s aging society, the number of patients who are required to consult other professionals for their underlying medical conditions and complications has increased considerably. This undoubtedly makes treatment difficult. Nurses are also required to have basic knowledge of foot care in order to ensure a more comprehensive understanding of foot-related conditions, as well as the ability to select appropriate treatment and care.
