Abstract

It was reported that each of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), arginine or glutamine is effective to help to cure the wound on intractable ulcer or bedsore. The mixture of HMB, arginine and glutamine-supplemented (HMB/Arg/Glu; Abound®) has been used in part for those patients in our hospital. It is suspected that HMB/Arg/Glu has to be carefully used for those patients with diabetes or decreased renal function because those nutrients still have energy and high protein. However, we are able to treat HMB/Arg/Glu on those patients until the intractable ulcer cure without deterioration of diabetes or renal function by modifying the total energy or protein intake. In this reports, we confirm the importance of nutritional management for the total energy or protein intake with diabetes or decreased renal function patients who take the HMB/Arg/Glu.
