Abstract

We explained physical therapists’ foot care for those who have diabetic foot disease and peripheral artery disease. There are several risk factors of diabetic foot disease, for example, diabetic neuropathy, limited joint mobility, foot deformity, foot plantar pressure abnormality, callous formation and so on. Shoe sores and burns often cause damage to foot, these are especially important risk factors. Physical therapists are usually concerned with these risk factors and have methods of intervention. Tailored Footwear Therapy prevents foot from deformation. Guidance and advice to shoes fitting prevents shoe sores. Range of motion exercise improves functions of foot joints and reduces the pressure of planter. Artificial carbon dioxide foot bathing improves lower limbs ischemia caused by peripheral artery disease. Using these interventions, physical therapists prevent wound of the lower limbs. On the other hand, the wound of lower limbs are strongly related to ADL and QOL of the patients. So physical therapy to improve ADL and QOL of the patients is important. These interventions need cooperation with medical staffs, doctors, nurses, physical therapists and so on. We strongly believe that physical therapists should be a member of foot care team.
