Description
It is already evident that water retained on the concrete deck of a road bridge will remarkably deteriorate and aggravate its distress levels. High-performance water-proof materials are prescribed by nationwide toll road operators, called NEXCO, for sustaining the immersion of water on concrete bridges. The methods, however, are difficult to apply at bridge repair sites, because they need long handling hours. Thus, focusing on the importance of this issue, the authors challenged development of an innovative bituminous mix that can assure sufficient water-proofing even within limited hours at the time of concrete bridge repairs. By taking many years doing basic laboratory tests for developing a specially designed modified bitumen, specifying mix properties and checking their durability using an APT facility, a prototype mix was obtained. Through staging field tests, a best construction method was finally obtained.
