Abstract

This paper describes the results of investigation on the relations between placing temperature and strength of mass concrete. Firstly, the author investigated chemically and physically the relations among the temperature at the time of making cement paste, caring temperature and properties of paste. He observed the fact that the rate of strength development of cement paste made at low temperature was remarkably greater than that of cement paste made at high temperature and tried to explain reason. Secondly, he examined the relations between placing temperature and strength of concrete. The author reached the conclusion that (1) placing of concrete at the lowest possible temperature above freezing point produces favourable effect on the development of strength, (2) placing of mass concrete at low temperature not only reduces maximum temperature in the interior but also develops high strength at a later age, which consequently creates a more favourable condition for avoiding temperature cracking.
