The rails of the streetcar line in Kanazawa City are suffering extremely irregular wear, and the authors have investigated the cause of the wavy irregular wear and estimated the impact imposed on the track. They have measured the bending stresses and the depressions developed in the rails by running streetcar. These records show :
(a) that the records of the stresses and depressions have many peaks and that the number of the peaks coincides with that of the waves of irregularity over which the wheels run,
(b) that the impact increases with the speed of the streetcar and reaches its maximum at a speed about 20 km per hour,
(c) that the system composed of the unsprung weight of the car and the track is forced to vibrate when the car passes over the irregular surface and the wavy irregularity is further developed by the impact loads caused by the vibration.
