<p>In Abhidharma doctrine, the four mindfulnesses (catuḥ-smṛtyupasthāna) cure the four inversions (catur-viparyāsa) by way of four qualities: impurity, suffering, impermanence, and non-self. However, the later Abhidharma texts (e.g., Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya) do not comment on the quality of impurity, in spite of the fact that they preserve the same doctrine.</p><p>In this paper, I clarify the reason behind the shift in the purpose of the preaching of the four mindfulnesses in Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma texts, from the correct (aviparyāsa, non-inversions) understanding of suffering to the analysis of all things (sarva-dharma).</p>
