Authors determined the changes in the liquid concentration during the hydration of granulated blast furnace slag, with relatively higher water to solid ratio at 20°C Hydration experiments were carried out using distilled water and NaOH solution.<BR>When slag was hydrated in the presence of no activator, three stages were found ;<BR>1. CaO and SiO2 are dissolved in the ratio of original slag. Dissolution of Al2O3 component is very slow. The concentration of CaO increases linearly with the time.<BR>2. CaO and SiO2 concentrations exceed the saturated concentration with respect to C-S-H. Al2O3concentration increases slowlly. The concentration of CaO increases linearly with the square root of the time.<BR>3. CaO and Al2O3 concentrations become supersaturated with respect to calcium aluminate hydrates.<BR>The dissolution of SiO2 and Al2O3 was promoted when slag was hydrated in NaOH solution. Especially Al2O3 dissolution was markedly affected.It could be concluded that the SiO2-Al2O3 network structure was destroyed at higher pH, and that the behavior of Al2O3 component played an important role in the slag hydration when alkaline activators were added.
