抄録

Detailed structures of isolated hydrogen-bonded materials, 5-methyl-9-hydroxy-phenalenone (MeHPLN) and 5-bromo-9-hydroxyphenalenone (BrHPLN), were studied by means ofneutron and X-ray diffraction methods. The combination of the two methods made itpossible to observe positive and negative charge distributions. Comparison of the twodistributions revealed discrepancies between them, especially in the hydrogen-bond region. The discrepancy yields a local electronic dipole moment in the hydrogen-bond region ofwhich ordering and disordering were found to be essential in dielectric phase transitionsin the materials. A calculation based on the tunneling model with the measured dipolemoment demonstrated that the phase transitions in MeHPLN and BrHPLN can be explained by this model.
