Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate studentsʼ motivation for studying abroad in English-medium degree programs (EMDPs) and to relate the current situation for students studying abroad at universities in Japan and Korea. As well as in Japan and Korea, the introduction of English-medium instruction at institutes of higher education is a current worldwide phenomenon. As for foreign students who study abroad in Japanese and Korean institutes of higher education, students have traditionally been assimilated into normal content courses in the Japanese or Korean language with local students. However, the difficulty of acquiring academic Japanese or Korean comprehension at the university level sometimes prevents foreign students from studying abroad in these non English-speaking countries. Therefore, EMDPs have been considered as one of the crucial strategies to accommodate qualified and diverse foreign students at Japanese and Korean universities as well as in Europe and other non-English speaking countries.

Despite the current push for internationalization at universities in Japan and Korea, the majority of students in East Asia, including China and ASEAN countries, still prefer English-speaking countries, especially the United States, as the most ideal study abroad destination. Thus the research question becomes: What is the motivation of East Asian students for studying abroad in EMDPs in Japan and Korea? This paper also questions the current national framework for the analysis of the push-pull factors. By diagnosis of what is behind the student motivation to study abroad in EMDPs in Japan and Korea, this research can providea new paradigm of studentsʼ motivation and reveal new factors.

To answer these questions, this paper conducted semi-constructed interviews of twenty-five East Asian students who enrolled in nine EMDPs as degree-seeking international students at five leading universities in Japan and Korea. Through qualitative analysis of motivation of international student mobility, the paper draws a new dimension of push and pull factors which drive students toward EMDPs in Japan and Korea.
(View PDF for the rest of the abstract.)
